Audio: Doctor Who - The Ratings War
Given away free with Doctor Who Magazine number 313, this disc was released to promote the second season of Paul McGann audios and included episode one of season opener Invaders From Mars and this slight story featuring Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor. Written by Steve Lyons, it's a limp satire on Reality TV, with producer Mr. Lowell (groan) churning out endless reality TV rubbish under instructions from - wait for it - 1980s comic strip character Beep the Meep - a war criminal that looks like a cute cuddly toy.
As played by Toby Longworth, Beep is quite funny and there are some decent moments, especially the sadistic lyrics for Beep's crowning TV glory Beep and Friends. It is however, laboured, even at its brief running time and could have done with a final script polish and some tighter editing in post production. Still, it was free and Baker has fun doing it, his Doctor allowed to be more theatrical as he's on his own this time out. Not really worth hunting down though.
