Red Dwarf X - Lemons
The new series continues to improve with a consistently funny and irreverant episode. Finding a rejuvenating shower in storage, the crew mess up its assembly (it's Swedish!) and inadvertantly create a time machine, getting send back to England in 23AD. Needing lemons to act as an organic battery for their battery-less remote control, the Dwarfers walk to India (!) and bump into a peace loving man with a beard called Jesus...
There was so much to love about this episode: it had the kind of daft big idea that Red Dwarf does so well and had an infectious sense of fun. There were also some great running gags from the Swedish flat pack to pops at Shakespeare. Rimmer's criticism that the Bard sported a 'skullet' was classic and I'm already itching to use it. Even better was the realisation of what the Cat has been eating from Kryton's storage locker. The script was a corker this week and the regulars were obviously having a lot of fun.
The crew also got a new set for a week with a wonderfully cheapo looking version of an Indian market. It had the feel of a classic Carry On with Lister and Co evading Roman guards. Jesus made a great additon to the cast this week and one can't help but wish he'd been added to the roster full time. Doug Naylor's script skirted skillfully close to the wind with its gags at the Messiah's expense, especially, once Jesus has returned to Red Dwarf, a scene where Rimmer manipulates his penis while Kryton sticks a wire up it to remove a gallstone!! Luckily it turns out this Jesus is just a Jesus and not The Jesus. best of all is Jesus's love of his new shopping bag.
From a slow start, this episode confirms that series 10 of Red Dwarf still has it and I found this week's as funny as any I've seen. More please.
